Slightly shorter-than CDV-size Woodburytype showing the card-playing automaton "Psycho" and its creator John Nevil Maskelyne, circa 1875. Mounted to period cardstock with printing on reverse. Overall dimensions including cardstock 3.5 x slightly under 2.5 inches (9x6 cm). Print size 3 x 2.25 inches (8x6 cm).   ( Inventory# ie56 )

The Englishman John Nevil Maskelyne was inspired to an interest in magic and illusion by contact with period spiritualists. Maskelyne was mechanically gifted, originating a number of illusions still in use, and is also credited as inventor of the penny pay-toilet.

Maskelyne's automaton "Psycho" -- shown in this period image probably clipped from a publication -- was a small turban-clad figure sitting atop a box of machinery which rested on a clear glass column. Introduced in 1875, Psycho performed a variety of spelling and other tricks, being commonly noted for its ability to intelligently play the card game whist against members of the audience. After thousands of successful performances in the Egyptian Hall, London, the automaton's mechanism, apparently with some parts removed, today resides in the Museum of London.

Online sources indicate that the "trick" of Psycho's machinery was that it could be controlled from beneath the stage by the introduction of compressed air into the clear glass column.

Condition: Top edge of image is irregular, perhaps trimmed or worn, light brownish discoloration on Psycho's "crown'".
