Vintage pendulum light painting, gelatin-silver print from glass negative circa 1950 by Duddington, 21 Iris Ave., Bexley, Kent (UK). A period pencil notation on reverse appears to read "No. 9". Print size 10.25 x 12 inches (26x31 cm).   ( Inventory# ie71c )

Light paintings are created by moving a light source in front of camera whose shutter is kept open throughout the process, so that the moving light leaves its motion-track in the resulting image. In pendulum light paintings, the light source is suspended above the camera by a string and set in motion. Lines in the resulting image show the track of the swinging light source, often revealing complex geometric patterns.

At some points the lines of pattern seem almost to emit a glow, perhaps because the light source hovered longer there on its path.

Although unsigned, this print was found in a group of similar images several of which bore Duddington's studio imprint on reverse, together with glass plate negatives in Ilford plate boxes of the 1950s era.

Print was stored loosely. Has some curl, wear at edges, surface wear and minor creases.
