Construction of the Paris Metro 1899-1911
From the back cover:
July 19, 1900: After seventeen months of spectacular operations, Line 1 was put into service between the Porte de Vincennes and the Porte Maillot. These first constructions prefigured those which would in the coming years interest, and somewhat inconvenience, Parisians, and better serve them with a long-awaited network of metro lines. In a decade, under the responsibility of Fulgence Bienvenüe, engineers of the City of Paris and thousands of construction workers were to build nearly a hundred kilometers of railway lines in tunnels and viaducts. The photographers of the time, with their rudimentary means, diligently recorded this technical prowess, creating hundreds of photographs etched onto glass plates. This book offers a selection of these beautiful photographs, showing a Paris under construction, preparing to host the metropolitan railway.Last updated May 6, 2023
