Native Beaties, New Zealand
Vintage albumen ca. 1880 showing three Maori woman in native costume, titled "Native Beauties" in the negative. Archivally remounted. (T) Print size 7.5 x 5.25 inches (19x13 cm). Price: $850. ( Inventory# ha86 )
A rich view of three Maori (New Zealand) natives in their finest Sunday wear, including very intriguing hats, ceremonial paddles and a striped garment woven from bird's feathers. While the 19th century title is probably intended as a patronizing snicker rather than as a genuine compliment, it would be hard to imagine any garment more delicate or feminine than one hand-woven from bird's feathers.
