French quarter plate daguerreotype, close view of a gent with dramatic side lighting. In period passe-partout mount. Overall dimensions of mount 6 x 5 inches (15x13 cm).
The photographer has taken pains to produce an interesting lighting effect in this image; the left side of his face is left in shadow but with a glint of light upon his shadowed eye, upon which the focal plane is centered.
